People often ask me what I love most about working as a writer and consultant in the adult industry, and the answer is often; writing sex toy reviews!
After all, who doesn’t love to get paid and build your sex toy collection while sampling out the most powerful pleasure-seeking toys the world of adult technology has to offer? It’s incredible! But I equally love showing people like YOU how to do it!
In the internet age, there is no small number of opportunities to make a living by reviewing products, whether in the form of blog-post reviews, YouTube video reviews, or even direct reviews on commercial websites such as Amazon. If you put in the hours and cultivate your reputation, you’ll have companies lining up to review their products for them.
This holds true for sex toys as much as it does for any other type of product – and, in fact, there’s a huge market for sex toy reviews.
Because they’re somewhat on the naughty side, there are nowhere near as many people willing to have their names attached to reviews as, say, for digital cameras or other similar gadgets. That means there is always a huge demand for sex toy reviewers.
However, reviewing a sex toy isn’t as straightforward as you might first expect. There are a few things to bear in mind and a few tips that will make your life easier.
Who Gets Paid To Try Out Sex Toys?
Firstly, it’s worth bearing in mind that not just anybody gets paid to try out sex toys. Manufacturers want reviews from people whose opinions and voices carry weight, so they’re careful about who they send their toys to in exchange for reviews.
People who will be prioritized when it comes to being granted early access to sex toys include:
- Porn stars
- Cam performers
- Adult influencers
- Adult bloggers
The bottom line is that you’d generally better be somebody who’s respected (or at least known) in the business. If not, you might have a harder time getting established.
With that caveat in mind, let’s move on to the tips that you should bear in mind if you’re lucky enough to be working as a sex toy reviewer.
Personally Test Out The Toys
This is reviewing 101: you can’t review something that you haven’t personally tried out. It’s true for a camera, it’s true for a gaming controller, and it’s true for sex toys.
Many reviewers think they can circumvent this part and simply rewrite someone else’s review in their own words. Note that this does not work nearly as much as such people think it will; readers are not stupid, and if they’re looking to buy a new sex toy, they’re probably reading multiple reviews. They’ll likely notice that you’ve ripped someone else off, and your credibility will suffer as a result.
Long story short: try it out yourself. Not only will your review be original, but it will also contain insights that you otherwise wouldn’t have had.
Don’t Be Shy About Getting Messy
Let’s be clear on one thing: you’re reviewing sex toys. Nobody expects the Queen’s English or detached, catalog-description-style prose.
When you’re using sex toys, things get messy. They’re supposed to get messy; that’s sorta the point. So when you’re writing your review, you should be similarly messy.
Did the new vibrator you’re trying out make you squirt everywhere? Did you load up a new Bad Dragon with synthetic cum and let it unload deep into your asshole? Tell your readers about that shit.
Make it explicit as hell. Your audience doesn’t want to be handled with kid gloves or condescended to, so you should be as open as possible.
Not only does such an approach endear you to your readers, but it adds to your credibility. A straight-talking reviewer is an honest one.
Take High-Quality Photos
Photos help in two ways: you generate marketing for the company whose sex toy you’re reviewing (“check out these images from one of our satisfied customers!”), and they lend credibility to you as a reviewer (as it proves you’re genuinely reviewing the product you’re claiming to review).
However, photos from a grainy potato cam won’t cut it. Make sure that your photos are correctly lit and that they are clear and high-resolution, with the toy clearly framed. You don’t need to be a professional photographer, but it’s a good idea to at least check out a couple of guides online before starting.
If every review you put out is a flat five stars across the board with no negatives pointed out at all, people will start to smell a rat. It’s going to start looking as if you’re a paid shill who’ll put out positive reviews of anything put your way, and if there’s anything people hate, it’s paid shills.
That’s why it’s important that you’re honest in your reviews. If there are any downsides or drawbacks to the products at all, then you need to level with your reviewers.
If you’re not being honest, and they buy that product on the strength of your review, that simply means that they’ll stop trusting you. And if that happens, your traffic will drop off, and reviewers will stop soliciting your opinion.
Keep it honest, even if you’re being sent the sex toys for free. Especially if you’re being sent sex toys for free.
Provide Tips To Get The Most Out Of The Toy
If you’ve done all of the above, it means that you’ve (a) built up a lot of credibility and audience goodwill and (b) actually tested the toy to the extent that you know how to get the most out of the toy.
What does this mean? It means that you’re an insightful, sharp-witted cat who surely has plenty of advice to offer on getting the most out of that toy.
You’re a skilled writer – don’t keep that stuff to yourself, but share it with your audience. They’d love to know how to squeeze that little extra out of their new toys, and you’re the perfect person to fill them in on how to fill themselves in.
